Cafe Review: Whoopie Pies

Have you tried Whoopie pies? I think if I wasn't following so many American food bloggers I wouldn't have had a clue what they were because they aren't well known in New Zealand...yet.

Apart from that one time I tried to make some and they failed miserably, (lets not dwell on the past) I haven't ventured much into whoopie territory.

Whoopie Pies

Whoopie pies fit somewhere in between a cupcake and cookie. They are pretty much a cupcake sandwich which takes away that awkwardness of how to eat a cupcake.

Well Nick and Lucy of Whoopie are making Whoopie pie's popular in New Zealand with their beautiful boutique shop in Grey Lynn.

Whoopie Pies

I like the fact that it's a little out of the ordinary. Like their latest creation:  Wicked Whoopie Sundaes, whoopie pie on the bottom, ice cream, sauce, more whoopie pie then topped with sauce and sprinkles. Genius!

I just had to try one of the crazy sundaes so I went with chocolate whoopie, raspberry ice cream, Nutella, raspberry sauce and topped with nuts.

It. Was. Amazing

Who thinks of these things?! It's like every kids dream come true. And we all know I'm just a big kid right?

I also found out that they venture out of whoopie pie territory with giant Whoopie "cakes" and cake pops. Not to mention that they serve delicious coffee and hot chocolate, it's kind of a one stop shop really!

It seems that Whoopie make any and every flavour. They have their classics but their flavour list is ever increasing and I really like how they get their Facebook fans involved in the process by asking what flavour to trial next.

They've got your classics, red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, then they start getting a bit fancy shmancy with flavours like date, walnut & espresso and black velvet, sesame & mandarin.

When it came time to choose our flavours we chose something in the middle, banana walnut with salted caramel and blackcurrant cinnamon with a dark chocolate centre.

My favourite was the banana walnut salted caramel, so delicious plus the consistency of the cake and icing was spot on!

I have a feeling that whoopie pies are going to get even more popular in New Zealand and I'm looking forward to seeing what crazy yummy creations Whoopie come up with next!
