Lydia Bakes is Back!

It's been a while since I've blogged here at Lydia Bakes and a lot has been going on for me. Thank you so much for your patience, I think this is just one of those times. There's so much to fill you all in on...

I bought a house. That in itself was pretty big. But not only that, we are now the poorest we've ever been! There's a lot to do around the house we never even considered important before we moved in, things like insulation and fixing the shower. Then there's my ever present perfectionist in me who wants my house to look like it's fit for a magazine cover of Home and Garden. So far we've bought a couch, coffee table and tv cabinet, now just to spruce it up a little then it's time for a house warming party!

The domain name is another problem I've been dealing with lately, if you've been following me on Facebook you may already know a bit about the whole saga. Basically, it's not really my fault (it's Blogger/Googles fault) but there's no point in pointing fingers anymore, I no longer own So please update your favourites tab (yes, I'm assuming Lydia Bakes is in your favourites) and never go back to, it's just advertising there, nothing exciting now. I've decided to move to a domain name as voted by you guys on Facebook, thanks for your help!

My studies have been pretty darn crazy over the past few months which is another reason why the rest of my life has been on hold. Thankfully, I just have four more assignments then I'm done for the semester. As I mentioned earlier, we are completely broke so there will be no holidaying away in the break, but I do have plans to pamper myself a little (my hair is in serious need of some attention!)

The last little bit of news I have to share may come as a bit of a shock to some of you. It turns out I have Coeliac Disease, which is gluten intolerance. I decided that 2014 was the year to take a good look at my health and finally make some changes so asked for a bunch of allergy tests at the doctors. Along with gluten I actually found out I'm allergic to cats (don't worry that won't change anything!), wheat, mould, dust mites and peanuts! The process has been a very slow one, from getting the blood test to waiting for an endoscopy at the hospital for over two months.

Although I never thought I had any of the symptoms, I always had a suspicion about Coeliac Disease as my mum has it. It wasn't until after the blood tests came back positive that I started realising that sore stomachs and the rest of it weren't 'normal' for everyone else! I'm not worried at all about going gluten free, in fact the only thing I'm worried about is that my lovely followers will desert me! (please don't). I know gluten free baking is going to bring with it it's own challenges but I'm still keen to give it a go and there will always be cakes to decorate, whether they are recipes with gluten or without.

So again, thank you so much for your patience and your support while I've been on this rollercoaster of a ride! I'm looking forward to sharing recipes and experimental baking ideas once again!

  1. Welcome back! I'm sure that being gluten free won't change your photography or ability to make beautiful things so I for one aren't deserting you!! I'm sure you are going to feel much better for it too.
I also have MAJOR problems with Blogger/Google over my domain name so glad to read I'm not alone - I've been so frustrated I wanted to scream because I can't get in and renew it. So is lost to the interwebs forever I think.
Congrats on the new house though - can't wait to see pics!

    1. Thank you so much Monica, for your words of encouragement! Honestly makes me feel so much better!

Who did you buy from last time? If it's GoDaddy try calling them, that was my mistake, I didn't call them in time (they have a free 0800 number) and they said they could have fixed my problem if I had called earlier!

  2. I'm sad you can no longer tolerate gluten, but I'm actually excited because my partner can't eat gluten either and now I hardly ever make cupcakes :( I'm looking forward to seeing your tested gluten-free recipes so I can share them with him!
P.S. also take a look at garlic and onions. My partner isn't Coeliac and can tolerate small amounts of gluten, but he also gets quite an upset stomach over onions and garlic so you may wish to consider them if you still find yourself getting sick!
